Who are we
Surgical and Medical Systems commenced in Christchurch in 2004 and expanded New Zealand-wide in 2006 to become a truly national organisation with offices located in Auckland, Tauranga, Christchurch and Dunedin. Since 2008 we have been certified to ISO 9001, which means we are able to provide a quality assured service and, where appropriate, support your own quality improvement programme. We are well-versed with national and international infection prevention and control standards (such as AS/NZS 4187) and use our expertise to ensure all equipment is functional, validated and meets the needs of your organisation.
What we do – SMS provides the following services:
Supply We are proud to be the sole New Zealand distributor of Atherton infection control equipment. Atherton equipment is used in hospitals throughout Australia and New Zealand as their products have a sound reputation for long-lasting, reliable sterilising equipment. We are also the New Zealand distributor for ‘gke‘ specialists in cleaning and sterilisation monitoring, ‘KEN’ instrument washer disinfectors, ‘Nidsa’ instrument cleaning stations, and NuTrace instrument tracking hardware solutions..
Service We carry out scheduled and on-call service on any make of steriliser, washer-disinfector or sanitiser.
Validation We carry out performance qualifications ensuring your steriliser meets industry standards, those required by law, or demanded by your organisation.
Support We provide infection control advice based on where the organisation is heading. We provide in-house education sessions on safe and correct equipment use wherever and however often these are required.
Consumable supply and education We are the national distributor of gke and Ecolab consumables. gke provides world-class products in performance monitoring and is an industry leader in cleaning and sterilisation monitoring. Ecolab chemistries are well-known for their exceptional performance and cost effectiveness.

Although standards are being constantly revised, we remain up-to-date with current standards including AS/NZS 4187, EN 285, EN ISO 15883, EN ISO 17665 and ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
Our commitment to the environment
SMS is committed to minimising the impact of its business operations on the environment. In order to achieve a continually reducing impact, we have developed an Environment Management System (‘EMS’) which meets the requirements of ISO 14001.
Our focus is on the risks to the environment that we can influence, with a particular focus on waste management, infection prevention and control, and health and safety.
We support our staff to help reduce our impact, and recognised that this is a continual effort to identify initiatives, implementing them, checking on their effectiveness and making any changes to achieve our desired outcome.
